Brain and Behavior
For Paper #1, you will conduct a literature search of the most updated, peer-reviewed literature on the neurobiology of a specific social problem (e.g., homelessness, poverty, suicide) OR condition (e.g., medical, mental health, or substance use diagnosis) experienced by a vulnerable, underserved, or oppressed population. You will also identify a particular developmental stage (e.g., early childhood, older adults). An example of a title would be: A Biopsychosocial Perspective (framework) on the Neurobiology of COVID-19 (condition) in Older Adult (stage) Nursing Home Residents (population). Once you identify the literature, you will choose a theoretical framework from social work (e.g., biopsychosocial, person-in-environment, bioecological systems) to conceptually organize your paper.Using the framework as a guide, you will then write a critical synthesis of what you have learned about the neurobiological underpinnings of the factor, with implications for social work practice, policy, and research.
The paper should be 9-12 pages (APA style with headings) including title page, abstract, and include a minimum of 10 peer-reviewed references, with no more than three (3) references published more than five (5) years ago). To clarify, you will write 6-9 pages of double-spaced main body text and add a title page, abstract page, and reference page(s). Be sure to define any terms you use and include the most updated prevalence data on the number of persons affected by the social problem or condition. The Centers for Disease Control Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)is an example of a good source for epidemiological data. The American Community Survey Census Data Tables and Tools is another excellent resource where you can find data on specific groups. If you are unable to provide specific prevalence data for your population or age group, use general statistics.
In addition to 10 peer-reviewed references from journal articles, you may also choose to include literature that is not peer-reviewed, but is of good quality, such as theses, dissertations, government reports, and White Papers; however, these types of sources will not be counted for your minimum number of peer-reviewed references. See the attached grading rubric below. In Week 6, you will submit a draft of your paper for peer feedback (worth 2.5 points of 15-point total) and you will complete an anonymous review of a peer’s draft paper (worth 2.5 points of 15-point total). The requirements for the draft and peer review are described in Draft Paper #1 with Peer Review.
Even if you are familiar with writing a literature review and synthesis, and using APA 7th edition format, I highly recommend you use the excellent resources below to help you write your paper.
