Some hints:
Constitutional issues are covered especially in Chapters 4 5.
I will often suggest which constitutional issue is at play in the articles Im assigning. This will cue you as to which section of the text to read.
If your article deals with, say, freedom of speech, then cite the text where it discusses freedom of speech issues. This may include issues relating to libel, slander or obscenity.
It will be a very good idea to cite a Supreme Court case that deals with your issue. The text covers lots of these cases for each constitutional issue.
In the Analysis of Non-Government Linkage Institutions section, identify and analyze the role of each and every linkage institution that is mentioned in the article. A linkage institution is a non-government entity that connects people to their government. Here are the linkage institutions you will need to look for in your article: public opinion, interest groups, political parties, campaigns, voting, elections, and the media. In discussing the role of the linkage institutions mentioned in the article, you must cite the text and/or lectures notion applying the course materials to your analysis of the linkages mentioned in your article.
Some hints:
Linkage institutions are covered in Chapters 6 10 of the text.
In analyzing the role of linkage institutions, you can write something general about the main functions of the linkages in your article. For instance, if political parties are mentioned, then you could cite the texts discussion about the role political parties play in American politics and government.
You can also write something specific about the role of the party as it pertains to the specific issues covered in the article you chose.
In the Analysis of Government Institutions section, identify and analyze the role of every government institution mentioned in the article. These could be agencies in the Executive Branch (the federal bureaucracy), such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of State or the Bureau of Land Management, the President himself, Members of Congress (House and/or Senate) as well as congressional committees, and elements of the judiciary, including the Supreme Court and any and all lower federal courts). Some hints:
Government institutions are covered in Chapters 11, 12, 13 and 15 of the text.
Cite the texts discussion about the general functions of the government institutions in your article. If the Senate is mentioned in your article, look up the specific functions of the Senate, such as confirming presidential appointments, or ratifying U.S. treaties.
You can also write something specific about the role of your government institution(s) that is specific to the issues covered in the article you chose.
In the section called Impact on the Presidents Legacy, OR Impact on the Elections, analyze how the issues covered in your article will impact the presidents legacy in history. Will the outcome of the issue at hand strengthen the presidents political hand or weaken it? Will the president benefit or lose? What outcome do you foresee regarding the issue and how and why will it affect the presidents standing in history? Again, you must cite the text and/or lectures notes. The citation can be general or specific.
Alternatively, given the context of your article, this section could analyze the impact on the president or other candidates in an upcoming election. Analyze the electoral chances of the president and his party based on the article. Cite the text and/or notes.
